Chairman of the John A. Kufuor Foundation, former President John Agyekum Kufuor says there is no justification for Africa to be hungry.
He says with the numerous natural resources at the disposal of Africans, opportunities exist to make sure food security becomes a reality for all.
Mr Kufuor says though a lot of progress has been made in dealing with malnutrition challenges on the continent over the years but there is more work to be done.
“Africa should not be hungry,” he told a side event in a video message during the Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD7) in Japan.
The former president was contributing to discussions on the theme; “ending malnutrition in Africa: towards nutrition for growth 2020 and beyond.”
President Kufuor commended the contributions of TICAD to helping ensure better nutrition on the continent.
Nana Ama Aning of the John A. Kufuor Foundation who introduced the former president’s video message touted the interventions the foundation has been rolling out in the nutrition sector in Ghana since its inception.
Dr Akinwumi Adesina who is President of the African Development Bank urged governments to prioritize nutrition in their agenda to ensure the development of their countries.
Other speakers at the session included officials of the World Food Programme, World Health Organisation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, among others.
The high-level conference, TICAD7, co-sponsored by the United Nations, United Nations Development Programme, African Union Commission and World Bank brought together more than 4,500 people for deliberations on African development.
Heads of state and governments, representatives of international and regional organisations, civil society groups, non-governmental organisations and private sector players participated in the conference.
