The University of Education, Winneba, has prevailed on its fresh graduates to exhibit their creative thinking abilities by becoming employers instead of waiting to be on the government’s payroll.
Vice-Chancellor of the University, Rev. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni said the mentality that the government should be the only one employing graduates should be nibbed in the bud and entrepreneurship encouraged.
Speaking at a virtual congregation ceremony held at the Jophus Anamuah Mensah Conference Hall, the VC urged the graduates to change the narrative by being counted in the field of entrepreneurship and job creation.
The University of Education, Winneba, was one of the first universities in Ghana that brought its academic work to an end successfully even when the pandemic was at its peak in Ghana.
Rev. Prof. Anthony Afful Broni urged the students to use what the university has equipped them with to help the Ghanaian society and humanity at large.
“Dare to be different; start something on your own so you can also be an employer employing dozens of people in Ghana. Do not wait on government to employ you,” he advised.
The University, according to Rev. Prof. Anthony Afful Broni has put in place pragmatic interventions that have changed the academic activities in the university.
He mentioned how their online resources have seen a boost and patronage from both staff and students.
“With government’s support we worked with MTN and Vodafone Ghana to improve our Learning Management System. This was to enable the system to accommodate greater numbers, improve user experiences and make it free for students.”
“From the initial 54,000 users and 680 courses on the LMS as of March 2020, there has now been a surge to 133761 and 3053 courses respectively,” he indicated.
The University through its webinar series, assembled seasoned academics and professionals that discussed at great length Covid-19 and its impact on health and academic activities.
The discussions brought to the fore great and insightful information to participants and also strengthened the bonds with students, staff, and other key stakeholders that have been locked out in their various locations as a result of the pandemic.
Chairman of the University's governing council, Prof. Obeng Mireku praised the government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and the support for the academic community in Ghana.
