Today on Newsfile, Samson Lardy Anyenini and his panel took on three major issues shaking Ghana’s democracy and security.
CJ Torkornoo Removal
The unprecedented removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has set off a storm. Acting on a petition of “stated misbehaviour,” President John Mahama dismissed her after a qualified panel inquiry under Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.
But critics warn this is not justice served, but politics at its rawest. Justice Torkornoo has taken the fight to court, calling the process prejudiced and flawed.
Gbiniyiri Feud
Land clashes in Gbiniyiri, Savannah Region, have spiraled into one of Ghana’s deadliest internal conflicts in recent years. At least 31 lives have been lost, while an estimated 48,000 people from 12 communities are now displaced — many fleeing across the borders into Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire.
Relief efforts are strained, and the Regional Minister admits the humanitarian toll is massive. Traditional leaders face mounting pressure to find a path toward peace before the devastation deepens further.
Akwatia By-Election
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) won in the Akwatia by-election, flipping the seat of the late NPP MP Ernest Kumi
NPP supporters allege foul play, while poll-watchers weigh whether this was democracy in motion or a carefully engineered shift.
Stay tuned in to the programme as the panel unpacks these issues.
