Swiss vibraphonist Thomas Dobler and Senegalese bassist Alune Wade are mature Jazz musicians who explore a wide range of rhythms in their repertoires and their expertise will be on show at the +233 Jazz Bar & Grill in Accra on Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13.

Dobler has been familiar with the Ghanaian music terrain since 2022. Some Jazz fans here have seen and heard him play in different contexts at +233 and would be happy to have him back with his well-executed stuff on Saturday, October 12. He would be on stage with the GHJazz Collective, musicians he has jelled with on previous occasions.

A sort of music chameleon, Dobler knows how to express vibrant and colourful blends when he chooses to. His classical training has seen him fit well into several Swiss symphony orchestras with whom he has recorded numerous albums. He has also worked with chamber music ensembles and his involvement with Jazz outfits always brings out his improvisational abilities.

Alune Wade, with his skill on the bass and distinctive vocal style, has been described as the artist who transports his listeners in one moment from a quiet street corner in Dakar, Senegal to bustling, music-filled streets in New York the next.

The Senegalese have played with a brilliant line-up of contemporary musicians and performed alongside well-known names such as Joe Zawinul, Salif Keita, Bobby McFerrin, Oumou Sangare, Fatoumata Diawara and Paco Sery.

He collaborated with bass giant Marcus Miller and co-wrote two tunes on Millers' well-received ‘Afrodeezia’ album in 2015. He teamed up again with Miller and other musicians for a performance of their jointly-written ‘Hylife’ song from the Afrodeezia’ collection on International Jazz Day 2022 at the UN General Assembly Hall in New York City.

The band of capable international hands Alune Wade will play with on Sunday, October 13 are Victor Ademofe (trumpet; Nigeria), Harry Ahonlonsou (saxophone; Benin), Bernard Ayisa (saxophone; Ghana), Cedric Duchemamann (keyboard; Reunion Island), Alix Goffic (drums; French Guiana) and Stephen Dufy (sousaphone; USA).

So with Thomas Dobler’s masterful strokes on the vibraphone and Alune Wade’s soulful grooves on the bass on Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13 respectively, it should be a great weekend for patrons at +233 this weekend. Concerts begin at 9.00 pm on both days.
