The Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) has put in measures to provide mobile toilets at markets and other public places to improve upon the sanitation situation in the municipality.
The mobile toilet would be placed at Community Nine Market, motor
way roundabout, Ashaiman Fitter Line, timber market among other places.
Mr Mohammed Abdulai, Head of the Waste Management Department of TMA
told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Saturday during a massive clean-up exercise organized by Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZHL) in conjunction with the Assembly.
About 500 youth and 100 workers of the ZHL participated in the
five-hour clean-up exercise. Mr Abdulai said the Assembly had already placed some mobile toilets at the Ashaiman main market, adding that, the other markets would get theirs very soon.
He noted that the sanitation situation at some of the markets were
a worry to the Assembly due to the health hazard it posed to the public.
On the clean-up exercise, Mr Abdulai said the primary aim was to
keep the city clean during the CAN 2008 tournament and promised that the exercise would be sustained monthly.
He further said the clean-up cost Zoomlion about 5,000 Ghana cedis
while the Assembly provided some of the tools for the exercise.
Mr Samuel Sakyi-Asirifi, Operational Supervisor of Zoomlion indicated that the exercise was part of a nationwide clean up campaign to keep the host cities of the CAN 2008 clean, adding that even though Tema was not a host city, it would receive many visitors due to its proximity with Accra.
He urged the public to observe good sanitation practices and also to
make use of litter bins instead of emptying their refuse on the ground.
The participants of the clean up exercise cleared choked gutters and refuse at the major roundabouts in the municipality, the central business district routes, the stadium road, Kpone, Ashaiman and all lorry parks in the central business area.
