The Ghana water company says it is early days yet to criticized the yet to be introduce prepaid water metering system for consumers in the country.
Speaking on JoyNews, Thursday, the Chief manager in charge of public relations at Ghana Water, Michael Agyemang noted that the project will work.
He was reacting to criticisms coming from stakeholders that the project is not a workable programme for consumers.
According to Mr. Agyemang, the outcome of the yet-to-start pilot project will determine the future of the prepaid programme, noting that the programme will take place in a yet to be identify community.
He therefore noted that the company has set up a committee at the moment, to find out the merit and demerits of the project as Ghana Water is working with some manufacturing companies to use thier products in the pilot project.
"If it becomes successful, it will be replicated throughout the country", Mr, Agyemang indicated, stressing the project will help consumers to monitor and conserve their consumption of water.
However, the National coordinator of the Universal Access to Healthcare campaign, Sidua Hor told Joynews that cholera and other water borne diseases will rise if the proposal is not stopped.
To him, as an essential commodity, water should be made available and affordable to citizens.
He therefore called on Ghana Water to improve on their revenue collection systems since that is the company's major problem.
His position is shared by other civil society groups such as ISODEC and the Universal Access to Healthcare, who have kicked against the introduction of the prepaid water metering system.
According to them, the decision, if implemented, will punish the poor and further worsen the health condition of a large section of Ghanaians.
But the public utility regulatory commission sees nothing wrong with the proposal. Its director of public relations affairs, Nana Yaa Jantuah says the process must be transparent.
