Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) Ato Ampiah has denied allegations that some senior Refinery staff have conspired with the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to privatize the company. On the contrary, Mr. Ampiah said he would do everything in his power to save TOR, “even if I have to suffer for that.” Certain senior staff workers claim some top government officials who own bulk distribution companies have worked to ensure that TOR does not operate at full capacity in order that their companies can import refined fuel to sell to Ghanaians. ‘‘When I read what caused Kwame Nkrumah to set up that refinery, my conscience will not serve me right if I should collapse TOR,’’ Mr. Ampiah declared on Adom and Asempa FM’s Dea Mehunu programme Monday night. The TOR boss said the Refinery’s inability to perform is largely due to lack of funds and the breakdown of equipment. According to him, the maintenance department will finish rehabilitating malfunctioning machines by Wednesday, when they will hand them over to the production team so that operations can resume. He urged the state to partner with the private sector to help the Refinery operate at full capacity. He hinted that by July at the latest, the plant would start producing. Even so, Mr. Ampiah said the refinery can only produce about 25 to 30 percent of Ghana’s Liquid Petroleum Gas and that the nation will still have to depend on imported products to meet the deficit.
