The Crude Distillation Unit, one of the main facilities for processing crude at the Tema Oil Refinery is still closed, two weeks after what sources claim, was a promise by government to import crude from Nigeria.Checks by Joy News further indicate that the Residual Fluid Catalytic Cracker is likely to shut down in 8 days if oil is not brought in. The development highlights the unending distress in which the nation’s only refinery continues to suffer.Joy News sources say the facility in Nigeria responsible for supplying crude to vessels from Ghana was vandalized by militants making it impossible for the vessels from Ghana to load crude.Sources also say one of the furnaces of the CDU has been badly damaged by stress and strain and should be replaced by December.Workers say the erratic supply of crude is frustrating, with some contemplating departing to the Middle East in search of jobs.Joy News checks reveal that for nearly one month government officials have been meeting union members to assure them the situation would be normalized.
Workers of the refinery however say they have no trust in the assurance by government. Some who spoke to Joy News under conditions of anonymity suspect some government officials are colluding with finished products for parochial interest at the expense of TOR.Government is said to have promised to release $200 million for TOR to purchase crude but the money is yet to be disbursed. Some workers say they suspect some unscrupulous persons are maneuvering to obstruct crude supplies to TOR so they can make money.
