The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has claimed that the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has become a warehouse and not a refinery.
According to him, TOR’s storage tanks are used by private individuals to store finished oil products that were supposed to be done by the refinery, thus making it a warehouse.
"What they’ve done now is they’ve killed the state institution, and now private individuals are the ones importing finished products and using TOR’s own storage tanks to store them. So now TOR has become a warehouse and not a refinery, and individuals are making millions of dollars every week," he said on Prime Morning.
The MP went on to say that the current state of the refinery is due to political intervention and the personal interests of some politicians.
According to him, former President Mahama was close to successfully revamping the refinery until the NPP took over and changed the narrative.
He attributed his point to the fact that the NDC government was able to link BOST, who imported crude oil, to TOR’s production capacity.
This, he said, affected private individuals who imported finished products, as profit was low due to the inability to purchase their products.
"Mahama leaves office, Akuffo-Addo comes, and the first thing they did was stop that arrangement, and they systematically killed TOR," he told Roselyn Felli.
When asked if Parliament had expressed concern about the situation, he stated that the President had turned a deaf ear to the public, including parliamentarians.
