Business activity at the Pedestrian mall of the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra has grinded to a halt after last Wednesday’s torrential rains destroyed shops and swept away many goods.
Joy Business’ checks reveal that full trading may on;y start on Wednesday as many of the traders have to reconstruct the makeshift wooden shops which were destroyed by the floods.
Traders are busy at work cleaning their shops and their goods that have been displaced by the rains.
Comfort who has been selling toys for 15 years says she needs new capital to reconstruct her shop.
She told Joy Business’ Chantelle Asante, “the flood has spoilt all my goods. Where is the capital? Even this market itself, market doesn’t move.”
The traders complain they have to gather new capital; others are more concerned about their colleague traders who have gone missing.
In front of a baby care shop that is closed are about fifty sets of baby clothing as well as underwear which are wet, muddied and destroyed by the rains.
Vice Chair of the Pedestrian Shopping mall markets says “we won’t allow anyone to work. We want to do general cleaning. Our shops would resume for work on Wednesday.”
