Angry traders at the new hawkers’ shopping mall at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra have hurled invectives at the city mayor after rains destroyed or carried away their wares.
A heavy downpour on Monday swept away items worth millions of cedis after flooding the new market and destroying some.
Mr. Stanley Adjiri Blankson was visiting the market to ascertain the level of inconvenience the rains brought to their businesses and to assure the traders of corrective measures to avert a future occurrence.
The traders accused the metropolitan authorities of shoddy work and incompetence and also questioned why the AMA should close the two main gates to the market.
On Monday the traders tore down the gates in their quest to move their wares out to safety and demanded that it be opened henceforth.
Though the AMA boss agreed to the demand, he said he would hold the traders’ leaders responsible for any mishap since the gates were for emergency use and also to prevent unfavourable advantage to those very close to the main gates.
The Metro Roads Engineer, Ernest Owusu, who was in the entourage of the AMA boss, identified poor drainage as the source of the flooding and promised as a matter of urgency will raise the level of the drains and regularly desilt them.
Mr Blankson however did not take kindly to the verbal abuse and accosted some men who he suspected were behind what he described as insolent behaviour towards his outfit.
