Road Transport Minister Dr. Richard Anane has advocated a stricter enforcement of road regulations while drivers abide by same to reduce the spate of road accidents in the country.
He disagreed with calls for the introduction of speed rumps on the high ways as a way of checking over-speeding and in effect reduce the accidents, and told Joy News “a highway should remain a highway and there should be no interruptions.”
He said “What is important is that drivers obey transport regulations and then there is enforcement of the regulations. If we have the enforcement and the driver obeys the rules, yes we are having accidents but it will be dramatically reduced.”
Dr. Anane also attributed the seeming increase in the spate of road accidents to increasing media reportage rather than an actual increase in the menace, saying previously it was not so.
“Thanks to you (media), whenever anybody coughs it is known all over the world. Do if an accident occurs today, it is known to everybody all over the world. Yesterday it was not so, so the impression that may be created is as if there is an increase, but it’s all because there is increased reportage, not so much an increase on the frequency of accidents.”
