The perennial water crisis facing residents of seven communities in the Ashanti Region is now history following intervention by The Royal Bank Foundation.

A bore-hole to ensure regular supply of potable water in each community brings relief, especially, to school children, who always abandon the classroom in search of water.

Ahinsan in the Sekyere East District, Wonoo in Kwabre East, Ninting in Mampong Municipality and a rehabilitation centre in Offinso South Municipality are beneficiaries.

The others are Edwenase Aboabo and Ofoase-Kokoben, both in the Bekwai Municipality and Kaase in Kumasi.

At Sakora- Wonoo SDA Junior High School, for instance, students had to crowd around stagnant stream near the school to fetch water.

According to a teacher, Felicia Kodie, the frequency of students seeking first aid for stomachache is set to reduce with provision of the bore-hole.

“We are excited this bore-hole project has come to relieve our endless effort and help the students in the course of their health and academic work,” she emphasized.

The phenomenon of women and children walking long distances to fetch water in other communities is very common.

“Water is scarce here. We had to trek long distances for it, sometimes already contamination water,” one resident at Ninting recounted.

In the Offinso South Municipality, the School of Physically Challenged for Action, Training and Rehabilitation Centre, a mechanized borehole brings relief to authorities and trainees.

Head of the school, Sylvester Barimah Antwi, was excited about the new facility he describes as long overdue.

“The provision of the borehole will help in everything”, he summed up.

For the adult population the Royal Bank intervention provides a lifeline against potential epidemic.

At the inauguration of four of the bore-holes on Wednesday, Head of Operations at The Royal Bank, Dr. Kwame Baah-Nuako, was worried people had to endure such ordeal for years.

“The more we give water the less likely the people will get sick,” he stressed.

He says the Foundation is targeting to provide boreholes in 60 communities across the country every year.
