The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has described as unacceptable a reduction in the prices of utility announced by a committee set up by Vice President John Mahama to review a recent hike in electricity tariffs.
The committee announced the reduction on Tuesday after deliberations between representatives of the Public Utility Regulation Commission, the Volta River Authority and the Trades Union Congress.
Residential consumers per the review will enjoy one per cent reduction from the 89 per cent hikes earlier announced in June.
Commercial consumers have been given varying reduction ranging from 7.5 per cent to a high of 27 per cent.
Secretary General of the TUC, Kofi Asamoah at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday said the reduction is not good enough.
He is even more disappointed with the “unacceptable levels of reduction particularly for the residential consumers.”
Mr. Asamoah also accused the government of a breach of faith. According to him, the government erred with the haste to announce the reviews when further consultations had not been done.
“We are dissatisfied with what has come and our concerns are two-pronged. One; that it was unfair to go ahead to announce the implementation whilst the body that set up the committee has not sat to discuss the committee’s report.
“Procedurally when you set up a committee what the committee does is to bring its job to you; you discuss, weigh the pros and cons and then draw conclusions. We have never had the opportunity to do that and we thought it was in bad taste for government to do that,” he lamented.
Mr. Asamoah called on government to immediately respond to the issues raised or the TUC will advice itself.
