The Tema Police on Saturday arrested two people for allegedly diverting a quantity of pre-mix fuel meant for fishermen in Tema.
They are: Eric Adablah, 32, a fisherman and Solomon Owusu Nyamekye, an attendant at the Galaxy filling station at Tema New Town.
The police seized 11 drums and 12 jerry-cans filled with pre-mix fuel worth GH¢ 1,462.50 and a bus used to transport the fuel.
Fishermen in the Tema area had been complaining that the Galaxy filling station had been diverting fuel meant for them as results of which they did not have enough fuel to operate.
Consequently, they formed a task force to monitor activities at the filling station.
Briefing newsmen about the arrest, ACP Ransford M. Ninson, Deputy Commander of the Tema Regional Police, said at about 10 am on Saturday, the police had information that premix fuel meant for Tema was being loaded on to a vehicle at Tema New Town.
A team of policemen was therefore dispatched to the scene to monitor the situation.
However, before the police got there the vehicle had sped off.
The police pursued them and intercepted the vehicle at the Tema motorway round-about where its movement had been impeded by the heavy traffic.
During interrogation, Adablah told the police that he was conveying the fuel to Ningo, Nyanyano and Kasoa for his canoes which were in dire need of fuel.
Adablah explained that each time he needed fuel he contacted the Galaxy Filling Station at Tema New Town for supply.
Nyamekye, corroborating Adablah's story denied that the station diverted premix fuel; saying the station sold the fuel to any fisherman of a recognised fishing group.
Nyamekye said he knew Adablah, as a fisherman and that was why he sold the premix fuel to him.
