Black Satellites head coach Jimmy Cobblah is elated his side got their 2019 U-20 Africa cup of Nations campaign off to a positive start with a 2-0 win over Burkina Faso on Monday.
The three-time champions needed a brace on either side of half time from striker Daniel Lomotey to edge West African neighbours in Niger’s third largest city, Maradi.
Jimmy Corbblah’s side took the lead five minutes before the break through Daniel Lomotey who latched onto a through ball and dinked the onrushing keeper for his first goal of the championships.
The WAFA attacker secured all three points in the 77th minute when he fired past goalkeeper Mohammed Traore from the penalty box.
“We had problems at home due the off the field issues and our pre-tournament matches were not the best but we kept on working and did well today against a good team,” Cobblah said.
“I’m so happy for the win and to be at the top of the group alongside Senegal. Football is played on the pitch and we concentrated on that.”
“Now we will continue to prepare for the next game match, which will another test for us but we will be ready.”
Ghana will play their second game against Senegal on Wednesday.
The top two from the group at the end of the first round are guaranteed qualification for the U-20 World Cup slated for Poland in May/June.
Ghana have not qualified for the global showpiece since a second-round finish at New Zealand 2015.
