Ghanaians planning to travel to the United States for the FIFA World Cup now have a clearer picture of the visa process.
Speaking at the American Embassy premises, Consul General Elliot Fertik provided detailed guidance on the steps, requirements, and common pitfalls for applicants.
Consul General Fertik revealed that non-immigrant visa wait times, particularly for tourists, have significantly decreased.
The embassy has boosted resources to ensure faster processing for World Cup travelers.
Choosing the Right Visa
Applicants must select the correct visa category to avoid denial:
• Journalists should apply for the I-class visa for media professionals.
• Fans and tourists should apply for the B1/B2 visa.
Using the wrong category could result in visa refusal even if the applicant qualifies for another type.
How to Apply
Applicants need to:
1. Complete the DS-160 form online
2. Pay the visa application fee
3. Schedule an interview appointment
4. Attend the interview with all required documents
Demonstrating Credibility
Fertik stressed that applicants must show strong ties to Ghana and a credible reason for travel. He cautioned that overstaying, violating visa conditions, or working without authorization could lead to serious penalties including long-term bans.
Travel Tips
Applicants are advised not to purchase non-refundable tickets until visas are approved.
Clearing Misconceptions
Not having traveled internationally before does not automatically lead to visa denial. Decisions are made based on the applicant’s overall circumstances.
Visa Refusals and Fraud Warnings
Most visa refusals fall under Section 214B due to insufficient proof of ties to Ghana. Although there is no formal appeal process, applicants may reapply if their situation changes.
Fertik also warned strongly against visa fraud including fake documents and agents promising guaranteed visas, noting such actions could lead to a lifetime ban.
