The Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, has denied ever creating a personal social media account.   

Investigations by Saturday vision revealed that a facebook account had been created in the names of Archbishop Lwanga to raise funds for the renovation of the Uganda Martyrs Shrine, Namugongo and that the people could as well send mobile money on 0776-994-634.

“I was surprised when many different people approached me and asked me about the face book account that was created in my names as “Arch-Bishop Cyprian Kizito” requesting people to be my friends on the page. Indeed I was caught by great surprise; as have never created such a thing," he said.

"Even sometime in 2010 some conmen opened a face book account in my names asking people to deposit money to help patients and orphans. But, I got to know it only last year in March when someone else approached him asking how far the project I was asking money for had reached!

That is when I realized that there were conmen out there who were using my name to collect money from unsuspecting public to enrich themselves in such a crocked way. Upon realizing that such a thing was happening, I quickly warned the public to be extra careful and stop remitting money to wrong people.

In an exclusive interview with The Saturday Vision, Dr Lwanga also urged authorities concerned with the control of information technology to investigate such scam.

"I wish to take this opportunity to warn the public not to deal with such people who are misusing technology by faking my names and titles and create such information that misleads the public. I repeat here that I have never created any face book page or account and I warn the public not to contribute any monies or answer the friendly request on the fake face book account,” Archbishop Lwanga clarified. 

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga warned that it was an offence for anyone to open an account of face book page in someone’s names without consulting or getting permission from the bearer of those names. It is also an abuse and blackmailing.

“Currently, there are many such cases registered with the Police and we have started vigorous investigations into the matter as they work hand in hand with the mobile telephone networks,” Enanga said.
