A UK legislator Henry Bellingham has urged the country’s leaders to give people more power over local decision making to enhance democracy. Mr. Bellingham, who is the Member of Parliament for North-West Norfolk in the UK is proposing among others, that Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) be elected so they can be more accountable. The UK legislator was speaking at a forum in Accra. Mr Bellingham said in his country, they were moving towards electing mayors and police commissioners. “Giving people more power over local decision-making is incredibly important and it also means that you have democracy on an ongoing basis and it is simple democracy,” he said.
