Government insists that the country's digitisation space has accelerated in a way that deserves applause.

Vice President, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia believes that it is at a level where other countries need to emulate to improve their structures.

Speaking at the Accra Business School in Accra on Thursday, the Vice President highlighted the role of information technology in government's development agenda.

During his explanation, he cited the motor insurance database under the National Insurance Commission (NIC) as a case in point.

In this regard, he recalled an issue in the United Kingdom where a Lamborghini was pulled over earlier this week.

According to the Vice President, the UK police struggled to verify the insurance details of the car.

"So they had to tow the vehicle because they couldn't establish whether the vehicle had insurance. Now they need to come and implement the motor insurance database because they could have just used their phone to find out whether the vehicle was insured or not," he said.

For this reason, he insisted that Ghana is out of the league of some of the developed countries when it comes to improvement in technology.

"So we're ahead of many of the advanced countries in this area," he added.

Dr Bawumia was the Guest of Honour at the official launch of Accra Business School’s IT programmes.

Still, on digitisation, the Vice President said the total revenue generated per year from the application of passports has increased to ¢56 million as compared to ¢1 million in 2017.

This increment, he said is due to the government’s digitalisation of the processes of obtaining passports.
