Pedestrians are scared by the rate of robbery and attacks at six uncompleted underground bypass' near the Sofoline Interchange in Kumasi.
The threat forces people to cross the road at unauthorised places risking their lives.
In an interview with auto-sprayer, Akwasi, who uses the tunnel as shelter, he said he sleeps in tunnel when market is not busy.
However, he admitted to doing drugs like smoking and taking Tramadol. He denied ever attacking any pedestrian.
“We don’t do drugs in the tunnel, we do them in the bush. I smoke and take Tramadol too but we are not thieves. The police sometimes arrest us but after investigations we are freed,” he explained.
According to police report, a young man has been remanded into custody for allegedly raping a teenager who attempted to use the tunnel.
Lack of funding has left the project uncompleted for over a decade.
