Uneasy calm has returned to Buipe in the Gonja District of the Northern Region following violent gunshots by supporters of two chieftaincy factions, Friday, the Police have confirmed.
Two people were said to have sustained gunshots wounds, a claim, the police is yet to confirm.
Police spokesperson Isaac Tetteh told Joy News police personnel have been dispatched to the area to restore peace.
He said there will be a heavy security presence in the area as long as it takes to maintain law and order and has called on the residents to cooperate with the police.
Buipe residents are no strangers to gun violence following years of dispute over the Buipe skin.
The Gonja Traditional Council last year de-skinned the Buipe-Wura, Mahama Abduali Jinapor for alleged insubordination, a decision a High Court has overruled.
In the midst of the controversy a new Buipewura, Awushi II was en-skinned.
The celebration of the Damba Festival in the area appeared to have triggered fresh violence.
Spokesperson for the court backed Buipe-Wura, Dr. Abdulai Jinapor told Joy News, Mahama Abdulai Jinapor was attacked during the celebration of the Damba festival, Friday.
He was whisked away to safety but returned to the palace after police arrived on the scene, Jinapor confirmed.
Spokesperson of Awushi II, the claimant of the Buipe skin, Seidu Kasoum in reaction also told Joy News his boss was attacked by the other faction whilst celebrating the festival.
They both claim two people have been wounded, but the police could not immediately confirm that.
Seidu Kasoum told Joy News in the interest of peace they have decided to suspend the celebration of the Damba Festival and urged the other faction to do same.
