University teachers say the Head of Policy Monitoring and Evaluation at the Presidency, Dr. Tony Aidoo, got his facts wrong when he suggested that the allowances of UTAG members are not taxed. The teachers are demanding he backs his claim. Dr. Aidoo also described the strike by members of the university teachers association as illegal. But UTAG President at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Eric Wilmont, said Dr Aidoo’s claims are not only untrue but also born out of ill-information. He said the best way, in his opinion, to clear any doubts and “perhaps educate Dr. Aidoo further is for me to show you my pay slip then you can publish it for him to see just for himself whether allowances we receive are taxed or not.” Dr Wilmont said he was not surprised that Dr Aidoo was uninformed. He accused the Head of Policy Monitoring and Evaluation at the Presidency of adopting diversionary tactics to divert attention from the real issues over which the university teachers were striking. Dr. Wilmont also challenged Dr Aidoo to produce his pay slip for public scrutiny to see who pays more taxes on his allowance. Dr. Tony Aidoo, however, insists the teachers receive allowances which are not captured on their slips and so are not taxed. He referred to some of those allowances as unauthorized allowances. He cited marking fees and invigilation allowances to back his claims. Dr. Tony Aidoo accused Dr. Wilmont of attempting to mislead the public. “Would he swear that if we look on his pay slip, we will find all these allowances listed? He shouldn’t bring himself,” Dr Aidoo stated. Source: Joy News/Ghana
