Police Wednesday morning mistakenly shot and killed two brothers at the Mampong Midwifery Training School in the Ashanti Region.

Francis Gbeneh, 33 and his brother Timothy Gbeneh, 28, were gunned down by the police on the school's campus after a distress call by a female teacher that armed robbers had attacked her.

The victims were answering the distress call and were rushing to the female teacher's residence when the police shot and killed them both.

Public Relations Officer the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Yusif Mohammed Tanko told Joy News the shooting was not deliberate.

“According to the men who were on the patrol, when they got to the scene they were told the robbers had taken a particular route so as they negotiated a curve they saw a motorbike take off with speed so they tried to stop them, thinking they were the robbers but they didn’t stop.

“They pursued them for some time and the pillion rider turned, so when he turned, they mistook the turning and because he was holding something that appeared to be a weapon, they thought he was turning to shoot them so they shot at them.

“Unfortunately, later we discovered that they were not the robbers but indeed they were also running around to see if they could get some assistance for the victims,” he continued.

He described the situation as unfortunate and “the command is not happy about it at all.”

A delegation has been sent by the command to investigate the matter and if the officers who went on that particular duty are found culpable, the necessary actions will be taken against them, ASP Tanko said.

He extended condolences from the regional command to the family of the two brothers.

A younger brother of the two dead persons, Libanus Dorrah, who is also a nurse at the Mampong Government Hospital said he received a call from Francis’s wife when they arrived at the hospital after the incident.

Libanus repeated the words of his brother while he took his final breath, “tell my wife I love her and my daughter too.”
