Two people sustained various degrees of injuries in a fire outbreak at a private restaurant at the cargo section of the Kotoka International Airport.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:45 Thursday morning.
Diane, a cook at the Hungry Home Restaurant operating at the Cargo D'or (Combined Farms) told Joy News' Beatrice Adu that five kitchen staff were cooking when a tube connected to a gas cylinder disconnected from the valve.
Owing to the fact that the stove had been lit, the leaking gas ignited, she said.
Diane explained that they had switched off the gas regulator, and employed the use of a fire extinguisher, in an attempt to prevent acceleration of the flames but this proved futile - resultng in the explosion. The fire spread to other sections of the restaurant.
During the pandemonium, she said, two of the workers could not immediately be traced.
One of the missing women, allegedly collapsed after inhaling the smoke from the fire while the other obtained injuries to her legs. Both were rushed to hospital where they are recovering.
Besides these two victims, no deaths or further injuries have been reported.
The Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) in a statement, assured the general public that operations at the airport are in no way affected by the incident.
The statement says the fire was brought under control by the combined efforts of the Fire Fighting Service of the GACL and the Ghana National Fire Service, adding that "investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing".
