School officials of the Ghana Senior High School (GHANASS) in Koforidua in the Eastern region have closed down the school following Thursday’s fire which destroyed the girls dormitory last night.
Officials have instructed students in forms 1 and 2 to go home leaving behind the final year students who are to study in preparation for this year’s WAEC exams, Member of Parliament for New Juabeng North, Akwasi Boateng Adjei has disclosed.
JOYNEWS reported school officials entered a crisis meeting mid-morning to consider the circumstances of the fire and the possibility of closing down the school.

On March 17, fire gutted the two story Nightingale block - an all female block at 7p.m. whilst the students were at Prep.
Speaking to JOYNEWS’ Eastern regional correspondent, Kofi Siaw, a female student said they saw smoke coming out of the Nightingale block whilst they were studying in one of the classrooms.

According to her, they ran out and called for help but it was too late.
The fire consumed almost all the belongings of the girls.
Ten students who were traumatized by the incident are on admission at the St.Joseph hospital in Effiduase receiving treatment.

Students had to spend the night at teachers’ quarters, while others slept in classrooms, Kofi Siaw reported.
It is still not clear what might have triggered the fire.
Meanwhile, some parents have gone to the school to consider withdrawing their children.
“I am here to considere withdrawing my daughter since she has lost all her belongings in the fire”, a father has said.
