Ghanaian doctor based in the US, Michael Obeng says he is not in police custody as circulated on some Ghanaian media platforms.
According to some media reports, Dr Obeng was arrested by the Ghana Police Service for working without a valid license from the Medical and Dental Council.
In a press statement, Dr Obeng, however, indicated that he is back home safely in Beverly Hills after flying to Ghana on July 21, in response to his alleged arrest.
According to him, he has never performed surgery in Ghana for a fee as speculated.
"This time around, I did not perform surgery for money, this is not the reason why I came to Ghana. I have been travelling to Ghana with my team of doctors and volunteers for the past 14 years to perform free reconstructive surgeries.
" To date, we have performed over 1,000 surgeries valued in excess of 50 million US Dollars, including a substantial amount of my own money.
"The Ghana Medical and Dental Council know me well and are aware of my RESTORE foundation and its activities," portions of the statement read.
It was alleged that a social media ad showed Dr Obeng demanding 500 US Dollars as a consultation fee from his clients.
According to Dr Obeng, his office was contacted by a gentleman whose identity was not disclosed, requesting a meeting without having a credit card.
The gentleman in question presented himself to be evaluated for liposuction but was later discovered that he had an umbilical hernia.
His office then informed the gentleman to bring his consultation fee of 500 US Dollars after being recommended to fly to Beverly Hills for surgery if he so chooses.
However, an hour later, "he returned with some other people claiming to be from the Ghana Medical and Dental Council and the Ghana Police CID Department."
But checks with the Council, he said revealed that the institute "is not aware of this individual and his activities, neither had they given any such instructions."
Meanwhile, the US-based doctor has instructed his lawyers in Ghana and Los Angeles to investigate the matter that seeks to tarnish his hard-won reputation.
In conclusion, he urged all media houses that have circulated the false news to retract with immediate effect and render an unqualified apology.
