Utility service providers are assuring consumers of improved services despite cuts in tariffs. Consumers within 0 - 50 units would have no change in their utility tariffs but those within the 51 – 300 bracket will get about six percent reduction. The new tariffs which take effect from March 1 have been necessitated by a reduction in the cost of producing power. Chief Executive of the ECG Cephas Gakpo says although his outfit has been pushing for increased tariffs, it will not compromise on services because of the downward review. He said a lot of things in the energy mix had gone well and would account for an improved service regardless of the minimal reduction in tariffs. “For example there has been a lot of hydro generation and we expect to have more hydro generation this year than anticipated during the tariff increase of June 2010,” he explained. Mr Gakpo said the combination of such factors will influence the services of the ECG. With the automatic tariff adjustment formula introduced, tariffs will be reviewed after every three months. The Executive Secretary of the PURC Steve Adu has told Joy News tariffs could reduce further during the next review depending on prevailing circumstances. He said “If we continue to use natural gas, the cost of generation will come down.” Source: Joy News/Ghana
