Ghanaians will be paying more than they are paying now for electricity and water come October 2007.But it is not yet known how much exactly the percentage of increase would be.The Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) says it is working out the details to be announced next month. The Electricity Company of Ghana, (ECG) is asking for between 60 and 100% increase, but the Chairman of the PURC Mr. Kwame Pianim has said, the ECG’s request can not be granted. However, he said, government will remove subsidy on tariffs and consumers will be made to pay for the full cost of utilities. It will be recalled that the last time the PURC increased utility tariffs, government absorbed the increase by subsidizing the cost.Meanwhile, a section of the public that Joy News spoke to, are not enthused with the 60 to 100% demand by the ECG, even though, they agree with the principle of adjusting the tariffs upwards.Other members of the public however, disagree entirely with any increase in tariffs by arguing that an increase in tariffs should be justified by improvement in the quality of service delivered by the ECG.
