The appointment of Victor Smith as Eastern regional minister has been approved by Parliament. The approval was given last night before the house rose but was however not without controversy. The Minority had called for Mr. Smith’s nomination to be revoked because they say the former Ambassador to the Czech Republic lacked credibility after he conceded at his vetting that he had no evidence to back a corruption allegation he levelled against former President Kufuor. The house had to resort to a secret ballot after the Majority side defended the minister-designate. Meanwhile Volta Regional Minister-designate, Henry Ford Kamel was unanimously approved by the House. Parliament has gone on recess for the Easter break, during which MPs will join their constituents for the biometric registration exercise, which begins on March 24.
