Kobina Andoh, a Communications Staffer at the Office of former President Jerry Rawlings has discounted claims that the former first couple are not seeing eye-to-eye over Mrs Rawlings’ desire to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2012 General Elections.
“These are false allegations. I don’t know where he picked such lies from and it’s absurd and malicious. It cannot be true that the former president would have to accept this because he wants to preserve his marriage,” Kobina stated in an interview with Citi FM.
Ghana’s Ambassador to the Czech republic, Victor Smith is said to have revealed that Mr. Rawlings, his former employer, is unhappy with the candidature of his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings in the race to lead the NDC, suggesting that things are not going on well in the home of the former first couple.
He is said to have claimed that his sources have disclosed to him that the couple is having a torrid time on the issue and that former President Rawlings would rather Nana Konadu steps aside.
The former president, according to Mr. Smith, was forced to support his wife in order to save their marriage.
But Mr. Andoh believes Victor Smith is a disgruntled former employee who is just bandying about lies on the former president just so he can please his new master (President Mills).
He said these personal accusations which are untrue are blatant and malicious and cannot be taken seriously, insisting that just coming out to say “you have sources within or wherever does not make the matter true.”
“The truth is that the former President and his wife are very happy with the way things are going and understand each other so well.
They’ve never had any argument whatsoever about this issue of the candidature. Don’t forget that the whole issue of her candidature is a call from the roots of the party,” he explained.
Mr. Andoh stated that Victor Smith’s previous association with the former president does not give him the license to make such comments, stressing they are “ridiculous, unprofessional and should not be coming from people who should know better.”
Meanwhile, Nana Konadu is still meeting NDC delegates across the country ahead of the party's Delegates Congress to elect a flagbearer come July 9.
