The ‘Beast of No Nation’ star picked up the award at a colourful ceremony held on Saturday night at Santa Monica Beach, United States of America.
The Spirit Award will be Abraham’s third award since he started active acting in 2015 staring alongside Idris Elba in ‘Beast of No Nation’.
He won Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor at Venice Film Festival 2015 followed by ‘Rising Star Award’ at the Black Film Critics Circle (BFCC).
Abraham’s role as Agu in ‘Beast of No Nation’ has been described as “one of the strongest and most phenomenal we have ever seen… A very bright future ahead of him.”
On the night, Idris Elba won ‘Best Supporting Male’ award for his role as commander of the mercenary unit that recruited child soldiers for a war in West Africa.
The Independent Spirit Awards, originally known as FINDIE or Friends of Independent Awards was founded in 1984 and dedicated to independent filmmakers.
