Competing schools in the National Science and Maths Quiz (NMSQ) can now substitute contestants during a quiz, Managing Director of Primetime who are the organisers of the competition has said.

Nana Akua Ankomah-Asare says just like is done in football, the competing schools can make their teams fresher by replacing a worn-out contender.

“…we have two contestants on stage but there’s actually three of them as a team but the third member doesn’t get to compete if they are not substituted because some health reason but this year’s there’s an option for the third team member to compete thus we are introducing substitution,” she told the AM Show on Joy News TV Monday.

There’s however, some terms and conditions to this new rule. Although the teams will be allowed to substitute players, this substitution cannot be done while a round is going on.

Ankomah-Asare explains that the substitution must be done when a round is over and the person coming in must do a minimum of two rounds hence the substitution must happen before the ‘problem of the day’ section of the quiz.

Veteran quiz mistress of the competition, Dr Elsie Effah Kaufmann who was also on the show have promised contestants some exciting experience saying that the questions are of high quality.

“From where I sit so far it has been about gathering the questions and making sure they of high enough quality and I think the contestants are going to be impressed with the quality we are bringing this time,” she said.

The NMSQ has been in existence for some 25 years and Senior High Schools from the Central Greater Accra and Eastern regions have mostly dominated the contest.

Prempeh College in the Ashanti region won the 2017 contest after a late challenge from St. Thomas Aquinas.

The competition is expected to be launched on Tuesday in Accra and the entire contest will be live on Joy News on Multi TV.
