A statement from Vodafone said the gesture also marked the launch of Vodafone's Community Water Initiative, which also coincided with this year’s World Water Day.
Head of Corporate Communications at Vodafone Ghana, Carmen Bruce-Annan was quoted as saying “the aim of this initiative is to create opportunities for more efficient water management and improved access to drinking water and sanitation in deprived and underserved communities.”
She said it was also designed to support initiatives of the Community
Water and Sanitation Agency and Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing in effectively managing and maintaining water and sanitation facilities.
The statement also quote Vodafone Ghana CEO, Kyle Whitehill as saying "access to safe water is a fundamental human need and a basic human right.”
He said it was sad that clean water stills remained a luxury to many people.
“We believe this initiative will give Vodafone Ghana the opportunity to improve the lives of many Ghanaians in deprived areas,” he said, and pledged Vodafone’s commitment to supporting government’s social intervention programmes by empowering Ghanaian communities to lead better lives.’
