Vodafone Ghana, a telecom operator, is sponsoring the Homowo amateur boxing tournament slated for August 16 to August 17, in Accra.
The boxing bout which would be held as part of the commemoration of the Homowo festival would be participated by 45 boxing clubs in the Accra metropolis.
Mr Ebenezer Amankwah, Corporate Communications Manager at Vodafone Ghana, said the telecom operator is very happy to be supporting the boxing event.
He said boxing is the heartbeat of the Ga indigenes and Vodafone sees it as very appropriate to sponsor the event.
"We are bringing power to the people through boxing and we are very happy to be part of this year's festival," he said.
He said Vodafone would continue to support such events, especially as it would help to unearth more boxing talents for Ghana.
Mr Wallace Nii Tackie Commey, acting Chairman, Greater Accra Region Ghana Amateur Boxing Association commended Vodafone for the sponsorship.
He explained that the boxing bout would be held under eight different categories including, light weight, bantamweight, middle weight, welterweight, and heavy weight.
He said winners of each category would be given a medal and other souvenir from Vodafone.
He called on other organisations to emulate the gesture by Vodafone and support the association, especially in the area of capacity building of coaches and other officials of the game.
Mr Numo Blafo, Public Relations officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, urged corporate organisations to help develop Bukom, a suburb of Accra, into a boxing arena.
He said Bukom is a boxing incubator and developing the place into boxing arena would help unearth more talents.
