The Chairman of the Volta Caucus in Parliament, Joe Gidisu has rejected proposals for the splitting of the Volta region into two separate regions.
The President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Togbuiga Gabusu addressing a general meeting for the Regional House of Chiefs asked members to favourably consider the splitting of the region, which he believes will facilitate its development.
But Mr Gidisu, who is the MP for North Tongu told Joy News the idea is untenable. He said the decentralized system of administration being undertaken in the country gives power to the districts to facilitate development.
“To say that splitting the Volta region into two will bring about development is a non-starter because of the fact that the Regional Coordinating Committees only coordinate and are not the driving force for development,” he said.
Mr Gidisu said what the Volta Region needs now is the creation of more districts as pivot for development.
He said even though he is not seeking to stifle public view on the issue, he believes it is not in the interest of the region.
