The Volta Region branch of the Opposition New Patriotic Party has condemned the decision taken by the GBC’s Volta Region Management to deny NPP flag-bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo access to its state-run FM station, Volta Star Radio.
Nana Addo is in the Volta Region at the start of a ‘thank you’ tour and was scheduled to be on Volta Star Radio Tuesday morning.
But in a dramatic change of events, the NPP flag-bearer was told he couldn’t be on the station, even though the NPP had agreed to pay for the airtime.
Chairman of the NPP in the Volta Region, Ken Nuworsu confirmed the incident to Joy News, describing it as unfortunate.
Mr Nuworsu claimed that the station manager, Ralph Avornu told them that in 2008, then candidate Mills was also denied access to the state-owned broadcaster, and that a precedence had since been set.
The NPP Regional Chairman rejected suggestions that the NPP was seeking to station for political purposes.
"Is there any law that prohibits a party from speaking on national radio? And we were going to pay for it after all. Don't we have advertisers' announcements [which are paid for?] If the man is just coming to extend his gratitude to delegates and for that party people from the Volta Region, what is political about that?, he asked.
