The MP for Odododiodioo, Mr Jonathan Nii Tackie Komme, has called on the electorate to vote for selfless and hard working people, with the development of their communities at heart, in the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections, scheduled for December 28, this year. He said apart from ensuring the development of their electoral areas, it would relieve MPs from some of the demands of their constituents, which at times fell outside what was expected of them as law makers. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the weekend, he noted that with development oriented Assembly and Unit Committee members, MPs would be sparred from some local and community issues, which should be handled by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA) and their sub structures. Mr Tackie Komme said most of the time, Parliamentarians were targeted for lapses in local and community development issues, such as sanitation, which was the domain of Local Government structures and stated that, with a dedicated Unit Committee and Assembly Members, MPs could concentrate on the demanding work of the Legislature. He said community development, according to the law, starts from the Unit level through zonal and town councils and sub-metropolitan district councils to the MMDAs, and stressed the need for the National Commission on Civic Education and other civil society organization to embark on an education programme, to let the public know the functions of Local Government structures, to minimize the demands on MPs. The Odododiodioo Parliamentarian reminded the people of the non partisan nature of the District and Unit Committee elections and urged them to ensure that duty conscious and well informed people were elected to mobilize the people for grass root participation, to ensure good governance. Mr Tackie Komme called on the people to ensure a peaceful election and to turn out in their numbers to select the right people, who know their communities and were ready to help solve their problems, to ensure development at the local level for the overall advancement of the country.Source: GNA
