Voting in the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election has officially ended, with electoral officials now sorting and counting ballots at polling stations across the constituency.

Polling began at 7:00 a.m. and closed at 5:00 p.m., marking the conclusion of a day-long exercise to elect a new representative following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Toure.

Election results are expected to be declared by the Electoral Commission later today.

A total of five candidates are vying for the seat:

  • Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed – National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  • Baba Ali Yusif – New Patriotic Party (NPP)
  • Umar Sanda Mohammed – Independent candidate
  • David Kanor – Independent candidate
  • Ibrahim Iddrisu – Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG)

The polls were devoid of violence, although voter turnout was reported to be low. A strong police presence was deployed to maintain law and order, while supporters closely monitored the counting process.

Both the NDC and NPP candidates expressed optimism, with party supporters confident of securing victory in the closely watched contest.
