WAEC receives additional fund of GH¢35m, urges release of outstanding funds

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the receipt of an additional GH¢35 million from the Ministry of Education to facilitate the completion of processes for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi noted that the funds were received on December 25.

The announcement comes amid growing concerns over delays in the release of results, which have disrupted academic calendars and admissions at tertiary institutions.

Stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and students, have expressed frustration over the government’s inability to fully fund the Council’s operations.

According to the statement, it will enable the Council to conclude the scanning of objective answer sheets and finalise the processing of results.

WAEC assured stakeholders that it is working tirelessly to ensure the release of the WASSCE results by the end of December 2024.

While the payment marks progress, WAEC has reiterated its appeal to the Ministry of Education to settle the remaining balance of its outstanding debt.

These funds are critical to addressing other financial obligations, including payments to supervisors, invigilators, script checkers, suppliers of examination materials, and other operational needs.

"The Council is appealing to the Ministry of Education to release the outstanding balance to enable it to pay Supervisors, Invigilators, script checkers, suppliers of examination materials, and meet other financial obligations," the statement indicated.

It also extended holiday greetings to its stakeholders, thanking them for their patience and support during these trying times.
