The 2025 West Africa Energy Cooperation Summit opened in Accra on Tuesday, bringing together key energy stakeholders to discuss strategies for scaling up regional energy development.

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, told delegates that West African nations must prioritise cooperation to build resilient, cost-efficient energy systems.

“The West African Power Pool reminds us that our goal is to integrate national power systems into a unified regional electricity market, delivering reliable and affordable energy to all ECOWAS citizens,” he said.

The Minister pointed to Ghana’s recent efforts in energy transition, including competitive procurement of power generation, standardisation of PPAs, deployment of renewable energy, and the use of digital tools for sector efficiency.

He also highlighted the importance of linking regional initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) to unlock industrial and trade potential.

Mr Jinapor urged participating countries to move beyond discussion, saying, “Let this roundtable not end with declarations, but with action plans—concrete, collaborative, and catalytic.”
