Wanlov the Kubolor and his Afro Gypsy band are set to launch their maiden album, Brown Card – African Gypsy, on March 12 at the Alliance Francaise. The 16-track album is produced by Pidgin Music but recorded in France and it is the product of the three-months residency programme in Paris which he won last year. The album, Wanlov told Hitz Entertainment News, is a combination of African traditional and Eastern Europe rhythms due to his Afro-Gypsy background. “…I have combined some traditional music, pop music, there is adowa rhythms, abadza rhythms, Afro beat rhythms and I have blended with melodies from Eastern Europe mostly Gypsy melodies…and the concept of this album was blend my two backgrounds being Romanian and Ghanaian so I went to France to record this album for three months…,” he disclosed. Wanlov said he featured some international acts including Romanian pop star Skizzo Skillz and Sena Dagadu, a Ghanaian based in Hungary. International violin players Jérôme Pierre Soulas and Filippo Bonini Baraldi all from France have been billed to perform at the launch. The night will also see the viewing of FOKN Bois’ pidgin musical, Coz Ov Moni and an unforgettable performance of a musical drama by Yaa Pono & Macho Rapper. This launch will be preceded by an invitation from the Institut Français and OIF for Wanlov and his Gypsy band to be one of three artists - Winyo from Kenya and Bélo from Haïti - who will tour Germany, Italy, UK and France, June this year, performing on the Equation Music stage.
