Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama has said that the nation needs a new type of teacher who is dedicated to the cause of the Ghanaian child.
He has therefore urged teachers to shift the approach of teaching and learning from teacher-centred to learner-centred.
Alhaji Mahama said this in a speech read for him by the Eastern Regional Minister, Kwadwo Affram Asiedu at the 50th Annual Conference and Workshop of Principals of Teacher Training College (PRINCOF) at Aburi.
The week-long programme has the theme: "PRINCOF at 50: Achievements, prospects and challenges".
He asked teachers to undergo frequent in-service training to be abreast of the rapid changes in education.
This will enable them to give of their best to meet the challenges confronting the educational sector as well as contribute to national development.
He said government has noted with great concern the challenges associated with the promotion of quality teaching and learning.
Alhaji Mahama reiterated the government's continuous support for teachers and said measures would soon be taken to support the staff of the training colleges to update their knowledge, skill and competencies in the universities and other tertiary institutions.
Right Reverend Dr. Yaw Frempong Manso, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, said that the nation was looking for quality selfless, God-fearing and disciplined teachers to serve it and advised teachers to live above reproach.
The national president of PRINCOF and Principal of the Presbyterian College of Education, Mr E.K. Osei said lack of motivation is a major factor in teachers leaving the classrooms to seek greener pastures elsewhere.
