Some Members of Parliament in the Central and Volta regions are warning, the water crisis in their areas has reached alarming proportions, a situation that could lead to the closure of public schools.

Over the last few weeks, parts of the Eastern, Central and Western regions have suffered acute water shortage.

The situation has abated in the Eastern Region after the government provided water tankers.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Keta in the Volta region, Richard Mawuli Quarshiga tells Joy News the acute shortage in Anyarko and some parts of the constituency may force the closure of some public school and facilities in the area.

“The people of Keta especially the enclave of Anyarko, Kpedji and Kornu within the Keta constituency have suffered for far too long because of lack of portable water. I have been to Ghana Water severally in Ho and Accra to see what can be taken to address this problem,” Quarshiga said.

According to the MP for Keta, although the people are commending the President for the good works he is doing in the area, radio and social discussions are centered on the water crisis.

In a related development, MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo Markins also tells Joy News, despite assurances water tankers will be deployed to Winneba especially, nothing has been done making the water crisis worse.

Markins bemoaned the fact that students have to go to school without bathing in the nine communities of Winneba and also decried the situation where people are using unsafe water to cook.

Both MPs suggested that the government must look at having tankers to deliver water to the communities without water just as it was done for the people of Nsawam Adoagyiri.

The Water Resources Works and Housing Minister, Dr. Kwaku Agyemang Mensah was to brief Parliament on the water crisis across the country.

Joy News’ Parliamentary correspondent, Elton Brobbey said on top of the Minister’s agenda is in agreement with the suggestions of the two MP’s that is to provide water in tankers to worst hit communities.

The Minister is also to announce to Parliament, the government's plan to embark on underground water exploration for which funds have already been given to contractors to commence work.

The long-term solution being considered is the protection of riverbanks by preventing farmers from farming there, Mensah said.
