Government is working to close the gap between demand and supply of potable water delivery, says Water Resources, Works and Housing Minsiter, Alhaji Collins Dauda. This follows announcements by the Ghana Water Company to ration the commodity in Accra and Tema. The company had explained the rationing had been necessitated by some faults developed by its filters at the Weija Treatment Plant. Subsequently four of its filters were shutdown. During an inspection tour of the site Saturday, Alhaji Dauda told the media the pressure in producing more gallons of water a day will be reduced when demand meets supply. One of the filter beds, he said, was under repairs and will be ready in two weeks. “If that filter bed gets ready, it means Urban Water [Company] will be in a position to add 3.5 million gallons of water a day to the supply system,” he noted. The minister was confident “...that will improve water supply to the people of Accra and Tema.” He also directed managers of the Weija plant to acquire one more filter if possible to enable them produce more gallons of water. Alhaji Dauda added that government will soon take control of regulating the distribution of water as a means of solving the recurrent water crisis. Meanwhile, mangers of Weija Water Dam have call for stiffer punishment for encroachers who pollute the site, saying the activities of these encroachers have increased the cost of producing water sustainably.
