Musician, Kuami Eugene, says the entertainment industry should not give room for discrimination following colleague, Edem’s revelation that he got offered less pay by some companies because he’s an Ewe.
Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, he argued that regardless of the language a person speaks or where they come from, no one deserves to lose deals or be treated poorly.
“If he [Edem] is indeed experiencing it, then it’s not cool. I don't understand because I am not in his shoes but that is not supposed to happen. I think we are all equal and have to be treated the same,” he told Sammy Forson, host of the show.
Kuami Eugene’s statement comes days after rapper Edem opened up on some discrimination he has faced.
In an interview on Daybreak Hitz on Friday, May 20, he bemoaned that his region and its people are “undervalued” when it comes to closing deals.
Speaking of being “maligned”, the VRMG artiste recalled a time when he [Edem], and Dagbon-hailing artiste, Sherifa Gunu, were paid less for being the then-faces of the Glo Network, as compared to artists from the Greater Accra Region.
“No radio person knows that. I have walked to meetings where companies want to pay me less because I am an Ewe-speaking artist,” he added.
However, Kuami Eugene believes that something needs to be done to put an end to such discrimnations.
“It is a bad thing. It shouldn’t happen to any human being. If he is really going through that, then it’s something that we need to tackle as a nation because we can't give room for discrimination,” he said.
Meanwhile, Edem wants the media to be “fair” when working with talents from the Volta Region and artistes from other minority groups.
He said that more attention should be given to these artistes, including himself, irrespective of their tribe and the local dialect in which they rap or sing.
