A member of the Communication Team of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fred Agbenyo has reminded former President Rawlings that Ghana is no longer under a military regime but a democratic one governed by the rule of law.
He said in every democratic country, respect for the rule of law and independence of the judiciary is paramount and Ghana under the Mills-administration is no exception.
Former President Rawlings at the campaign launch of his wife Nana Konadu to challenge President Mills in the party’s flag-bearership race repeated his criticisms of the Mills-led government on its failure to prosecute corrupt ministers in the erstwhile Kufour administration.
The former President, also the founder of the NDC, stressed that the party will lose election 2012 even if President Mills is elected as the party’s presidential candidate in the upcoming presidential primaries scheduled for July 8-10 in Sunyani.
Reacting to the former president’s assertion on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Fred Agbenyo stressed that “Everybody must come to terms with the reality (that) there is a paradigm shift in our governing process; we are in a democracy; we are not in a military regime”.
He said the Mills–led government will always follow due process and not force judges to take decisions in their favour.
“We can’t sit at the kangaroo courts today and try people by whichever way; we must follow the due process so what else is somebody expecting that the president should have done”.
Fred Agbenyo noted that President Mills does not see the presidency as his ‘birth right’ but as a service to Ghanaians who gave him the mandate.
On President Mills’ chances against Mrs. Rawlings in the party’s flag-bearership race, he said “I can assure you that the man will triumph and on the 8,9, and 10, July, the NDC delegates will speak and speak very decisively that they will endorse Prof. Mills again to become the flag-bearer and President of Ghana”.
