Administrative Manager of the KPOGAS furniture works, Christian Agyare says negotiations with government to supply new furniture in Parliament were inconclusive.
According to him, the time given to them by Parliament was very limited and as a result they could not provide Parliament with furniture.
“We needed enough time to provide furniture to Parliament but the time frame was too short, that is why we could not supply them.
Barely a day after members resumed sitting, some of the imported chairs are reportedly breaking and the tables ripping off.
This has generated a heated debate with many, including furniture manufacturers in the country, describing President Mahama's campaign to promote made in Ghana goods as a political gimmick.
Also, some Members of Parliament say parliament should provide them with their old chairs since the safety of the China made furniture cannot be guaranteed.
In support, Mr. Agyare expressed shock when he heard the furniture were imported from China when there are equally good furniture companies in Ghana.
We didn’t tell them that we cannot supply but we told them that the time was short” he said on Adom Fm’s "Dwaso Nsem" morning show Thursday.
This notwithstanding, Mr. Agyare said they are ready to supply furniture to Parliament should they be given ample time to do the work.
