Police at Tesano in Accra have rejected accusations they have abandoned the case involving the 22-year-old lady who has been deformed following an acid attack on her by her ex-boyfriend.
Anita Otema says was sleeping during a light out when her ex walked into the room and poured acid on her. The young lady, besides severe burns to her face, arms, torso and thighs also lost an eye to the savage attack.
Apparently the attack followed allegations by a pastor that Anita was the cause of her ex’s frequent ailments.
Police have as yet been unable to locate the whereabouts of the young man.
JoyNews’ Beatrice Adu visited the Tesano Police Station with the victim in the company of Lawyer Kofi Bentil and a colleague lawyer, who volunteered to assist Anita in the matter.
Tesano Divisional Police Commander ACP Francis Aboagye Nyarko denied allegations that the police have given up on the search of Anita’s attacker. On the contrary, he said, the police have been following up on intelligence which suggested that the suspect was hiding out in Nkawkaw and Somanya but their searches have proven unsuccessful so far.
He assured that the police were being “professional” and “on course” with the case.
ACP Nyarko maintained that a docket had been prepared and steps were still being taken to locate and arrest the alleged attacker.
Kofi Bentil expressed his happiness about open reception given them by the Divisional Commander, and the fact that the police were still on the case. According to him, despite the suspect’s still being at large, the fact that a docket has been produced is proof positive that something has been done.
This, he said, was encouraging, as, “in a society like what we have, citizens must be assured that if things like this happen to them, there is a system that can take care of them.”
Attacks such as Anita’s are not that uncommon.
The director of National Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital revealed last week that about 10 acid attack cases are received annually at the Centre, and that majority of the victims are female.
