International corporate lawyer and entrepreneur, Victoria Bright, has called on the government to intensify its fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, stressing that public confidence in the effort will depend on visible and measurable results.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, January 10, Ms Bright said the government must demonstrate real progress by restoring polluted water bodies to their natural state.

“We need a huge push on galamsey until our water bodies start changing colour back to their natural colours. People need to see it to believe it,” she said.

According to her, despite repeated assurances by successive governments, many Ghanaians remain unconvinced that the battle against illegal mining is being won, largely because the environmental damage remains evident.

Ms Bright explained that the continued pollution of rivers and other water sources reinforces public perception that enforcement efforts are either inadequate or inconsistent.

“As long as our rivers remain polluted, people will feel the galamsey fight is not being won,” she added.

Beyond the galamsey issue, Ms Bright also touched on gender-focused development policies, particularly the proposed Women’s Development Bank. She expressed anticipation for its implementation, noting its potential to empower women economically and support small and medium-sized enterprises led by women.

“As a woman, I am also waiting to see the Women’s Development Bank. I believe it can make a real difference,” she stated.
